The stigma of the pistil, which is the very top of the pistil, has at least 7 traits on seperate chromosomes. The seven independent traits were important because by knowing the seperate traits then Mendel could use his knowledge of statistics to analyze his observations to better understand the seven traits and he could see which traits would affect reproduction in the flowers and which ones wouldn't by controlling the pollination of the plants.
